THE 4H CLUB By Genus Theatre Part of this year’s Neanderthal Arts Festival

This July, Genus Theatre proudly announces the opening of its most imaginative, hard-hitting, and darkly comedic creation yet. This century spanning, pop culture infused tale is one of loss, calamity, human tragedy, and tongue-in-cheek timeless friendships: Frano Marsic’s The 4H Club!

The 20th Century was a time of incredible change. Humanity soared to some of its greatest heights, and plunged to perhaps its darkest lows. We experienced life at its most vibrant and destructively beautiful. As the 21st century has dawned, we continue on a similar path, carefully treading the line between glorious achievement, and world ending destruction. But what if this entire time, some group out there somewhere, has been pulling the strings?

What if they had a plan? A plan to bring the world to its end? And what if they were never quite able to bring that plan to fruition? Because they were always fighting? And bickering? Like petulant children. And what would happen when those charged with ensuring that humanity feels the pain of loss, finally start to experience a little loss of their own?

All hell hilariously breaks loose.

The 4H Club, a 65 minute show, premieres at the Vancouver East Cultural Center (The Cultch) on the historic stage this July 21, and is presented as part of the Neanderthal Arts Festival.

DATES: July 21 – 25

Presented as part of the Neanderthal Arts Festival

SHOW DESCRIPTION
Genus Theatre presents a brazenly comedic look at the follies of the newest incarnation of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The story spans the past century as the dysfunctional quartet of Death, Famine, War and Pestilence barge their way through history. Desperate to rehabilitate their image and successfully bring about the end of the world, the foursome face their biggest challenge yet: each other. The pace is fast and the scope is grand, but the focus is wonderfully and pettily personal, as the 4H Club’s headstrong desires and very human weaknesses inexorably bring humanity closer to the end of the road.

HISTORY OF THE PIECE

In 2006 a Genus team comprised of Kristian Ayre, Jordan Bodiguel, Frano Marsic, Aidan Maxted, Frank Nickel, and Kelly Sheridan participated in Show Off – Theatre Under the Gun, a 48 theatre festival in which companies are given a prop, a line of text, an image and a sound clip that inspires the creation of a 10-15 minute piece. Our 48 hours resulted in the first incarnation of The 4H Club. The production won an audience choice award and was held over at Performance Works on Granville Island. In 2009, The 4H Club was resurrected and featured in a Best of Theatre Under the Gun anniversary festival.

The 4H Club is presented as part of the Neanderthal Arts Festival. Please visit their website for ticket and festival info.

“I loved Genus Theatre’s Done by Dinner. The concept is elegantly simple: audience members play a game of street hockey and have to get out of the way every time a car goes by. Conflict with a driver provokes a tidy narrative arc. The real joy, though, is that you get to play, holler, and form an instant community.” – Colin Thomas | Georgia Straight Review

Genus Theatre is proud to present Done By Dinner as part of the inagural launch of Bridge Mix. Featuring 9 of Vancouver’s most exciting emerging and established Theatre Companies performing original installations in the top three levels of a downtown parkade. The audience is led through the parkade to observe how each scene integrates an urban backdrop, converting it into an improptu performance space. Bridge Mix will also feature music and a roving bar. Participating companies include: ITSAZOO Productions, Enlightenment Theatre, Tiger Milk Collective, Upintheair Theatre, Genus Theatre, Spectral Theatre, Slam Ink, SNAFU, and the Peter and Chris Show.
